Ernest Wilson Reviews: Richards Family Fisheries - Award winners

We were pleased to learn that Barrie Richards of Richards Family Fisheries has won the Chip shop of the year award from the Reporter series of newspapers

Barrie is no stranger to being in the press and was in the Huddersfield Examiner a few years ago when the newspaper documented his story and how Ernest Wilson had helped him during his progression in buying and selling all four of his shops. Details below:

A FORMER marketing director is running a thriving takeaway business – thanks to help from a West Yorkshire business transfer agent and commercial bankers based in Huddersfield.
Former marketing director Barrie Richards, who was made redundant, launched his first fish and chip shop in Pudsey after talking to staff at business transfer agent Ernest Wilson about buying a business and securing finance from Lloyds TSB Commercial in Huddersfield.
Now his Richards Family Fisheries brand is wining plaudits on visitor recommendation websites.
Fish and chips remain the number one takeaway food in the UK – with more than 10,000 fish and chip shops selling more than 300m portions each year, The industry is worth about £1.2bn – meaning that £1 out of every £100 spent on food is spent in a chippie.
Mr Richards purchased his first fish and chip shop in Pudsey with the assistance of Lloyds TSB Commercial.
Wendy Hallas, of the bank’s Huddersfield Business Centre, said “We are always on the lookout for opportunities to support Iocal businessmen and women and I was in no doubt that Barrie was an ideal prospect to support. We were delighted to able to back him with his new venture and way of life.”
To help ensure success in his new venture, Mr Richards followed Ernest Wilson’s advice and enrolled on a training course with the National Federation of Fish Friers.
His business performed very well and turnover increased. Having established his first shop, Mr Richards sold it a year later through Ernest Wilson and bought another chippie that they had for sale. He increased turnover at that store by four times and went on to sell it for a substantial profit.
This time, he opened up an empty unit as a fish and chip shop – growing turnover from a standing start to more than £3,000 a week before selling again through Ernest Wilson.
Richards Family Fisheries is now running its fourth shop at Bradford Road, Cleckheaton, having had an amazing opening day on November 5.
Said Mr Richards: “There is life after redundancy! I am so glad that I walked into Ernest Wilson’s that day and with their support and that of the NFFF and Lloyds TSB Commercial I have established a new career with new skills which I find fulfilling and challenging at the same time.
“There is never a dull moment and I find the ability I now have to make, back and implement my own decisions thrilling.”

Ernest Wilson Reviews - Business Rates Review

Ernest Wilson Reviews - Business Rates Review

The government is conducting a wide-ranging review of business rates in response to concerns from many business ratepayers that business rates are in need of reform to make them fit for purpose in a 21st century economy.

During this Parliament, the government has taken action to reduce the burden of business rates on all sectors, with particular support targeted at small businesses and the retail sector. It is also working with businesses and local authorities to bring forward practical changes to the administration of business rates in response to businesses’ calls for clearer billing, better sharing of information and a more efficient appeals system.

The tax system, including business rates, should provide stable and sustainable revenues to fund public services in the least distortive way. The debate about the future of business rates centres on whether the tax is sustainable, fairly targeted and sufficiently flexible to respond to both changing patterns of property usage and conditions in the wider economy. The government wants to ensure the widest possible debate about how the system can be improved to meet these concerns.

Recent changes allowing local authorities to retain a percentage of the business rates they collect have concentrated thoughts on whether the system could better incentivise investment and growth. Some have put forward suggestions for changing the way that business rates raise revenue, ranging from major changes (such as basing them on business turnover) to adaptations of the existing system (such as changing the frequency of revaluations).

Others have highlighted the value of keeping business rates broadly as they are to retain stability and predictability which allows both businesses and local authorities to make decisions with improved certainty and confidence.

So while there is agreement across business sectors that the business rates system is in need of reform, there is no clear consensus on how best to achieve this. This is why we want to take the opportunity to undertake a thorough, wide-ranging and robust examination of the existing business rates system and to explore options for future reform.

This document confirms the terms of reference for this review and provides further context for its aims and core themes. This is the biggest review of business rates in a generation and we would urge businesses, local communities and others to get involved. We want to hear views from a wide range of stakeholders to ensure that the review’s outcomes are informed by a broad and open discussion and that they balance the concerns of central government, local government and business ratepayers. The review will report its findings by Budget 2016.

Another Positive Review of Ernest Wilson's Service

From: JimmyHawthorn

Subject: RE: Jimmys Fitness Centre

Hello Stuart,

I put up for sale Jimmy's fitness centre and had a potential client sent by you to look round my gym the day after it was put on the market. Subsequently, the chap who looked around the gym ended up buying from me. I was told the Gym would likely sell within a month or so and was really pleased it didn't take that long.

Ernest Wilson helped me from start to the finish. All the staff were polite and courteous and helpful in every way possible and I have absolutely no complaints.

I have dealt with Ernest Wilson over the past 20 years and always found them to be very professional. I would not hesitate  using or recommending Ernest Wilson to other clients who may be interested in selling their business.

Jimmy Hawthorn (Jimmy's Fitness Centre)
